Volunteers Needed!

We are now accepting volunteer applications for the year! Please contact us and/or visit the SEC office (UTM Student Centre Rm 150) to receive a SEC general volunteer application. Please specify if you are interested in becoming a peer counsellor in your email and you will be sent an additional application to fill out.
We are ALSO looking to fill the following additional positions (you may take these positions either with or without a peer counselling position):
- Event Coordinators
- External Education Presenters
- Advertising Volunteer
- Event Volunteers

To be eligible for a peer counsellor and/or an additional position, you will be required to fill out a volunteer form (and indicate which position(s) you are interested in applying for) and to attend both 2 days of training (October 3-4, 2009). Following training we will conduct an interview and select the most qualified applicant.
If the training date has already passed but you are interested in getting involved, feel free to contact us anyway. Some positions (such as event volunteers and external education presenters)may still be available after general training in October.
Job Descriptions
Peer Counsellors
Position Description
The UTM Sexual Education and Peer Counselling Centre (UTM SEC) is looking for dedicated, open-minded, and non-judgmental peer counsellors. Counsellors hold office hours throughout the week (2-3 hours per week) to provide support to students coming into the centre for information, condoms, and guidance. Our counselling program aims to offer peer-to-peer support; this means we are not clinical counsellors and do not offer repeated, regular counseling or crisis counselling. Our counsellors are trained to provide support on a variety of issues- STI prevention, birth control, crisis issues, relationship matters, LGBTQ issues, and lots more.
All our counsellors will be trained in sexual health/STI prevention issues, and in relationship issues. Ideal candidates are responsible, mature, trustworthy individuals with excellent communication skills. Upper year students are especially encouraged to apply.
Application Process
Candidates must
contact us and/or visit the SEC office for a general application form and hand it into the SEC office before September 24th, 2009, indicating which position they’d like to take. Applicants then come to mandatory training on October 3 and 4. After training, successful candidates will be contacted and start their office hours in the following week.
Duties Include:
-Holding office hours each week (2-3 hours), providing support and resources to UTM community
-Attending training on October 3 and 4
-Keeping the office clean and welcoming
ADDITIONAL POSITIONS:
Event Volunteers
Position Description
UTM SEC puts on several large-scale events during the year. We are looking for enthusiastic, dedicated and reliable individuals with experience in event planning to help coordinate two of our most important events: the World Aids Gala (around Nov / Dec) and Sex Pub (in March). If you don't have experience but you love helping out with big events and want to earn volunteer hours, you can join our team too!
Duties Include:
-Working with a team of volunteers
-Communicate with them
-Plan and implement the events along with the executive team
External Education Presenters
Position Description
UTM SEC is seeking several outgoing, dedicated individuals who are passionate about sexual health education for its external education committee. This committee is in charge of SEC’s presentations and workshops throughout the year, providing information on a variety of subjects, including safe sex and sex toys. In the past, workshops have taken place during Sex and U Week, and for Residence communities. Preference will be given to applicants with strong public speaking abilities.
Duties Include:
-Regular meetings with the rest of the committee, reporting to the External Education Director
-Participate in additional training and workshops specific to this role
-Facilitate workshops and activities for different campus groups
-Act as an ambassador at any SEC-related events
Advertising Volunteer
Position Description
As a part of SEC’s efforts to increase our visibility on campus, we are seeking a creative, resourceful, dependable individual to assist the Advertising Director with the conception, planning, and implementation of different new marketing initiatives. Applicants with photography skills and equipment are preferred.
Duties Include:
-Assisting the executives with developing advertising initiatives
-Putting up, taking down, and possibly designing flyers for campus events
-Assist in the planning and execution of promotional teasers for events
-Acting as the official photographer at SEC events
